Fan experiences at the show: Background: The Grammys Committee had contacted the Fan Club a few days before the event asking if any of the organizers would be at the show. They were trying to arrange for someone from the Fan Club to interview Pat and Neil prior to the show. Based on that, Harold and Robin had passes for the show and access to do the interview.
The group who planned the trip to New York City together were Harold, Robin, Danielle and Anne Marie. From Harold: I should let Robin give the run down, it'd probably be more complete and accurate. To start off, I managed to drive in and out of NY with no problems other than ended off in places that I didn't want to be, but recovered nicely from them and wound up exactly where I wanted to be. I usually get somewhat nervous driving in NY, but oddly, this time it didn't seem to bother me. I got in to NY around 11:30 and finally hooked up with Robin, Danielle and Anne Marie at the Times Square Hard Rock a little after 3 PM. Phone service is somewhat erratic in Manhattan - due to all the buildings I guess. Meanwhile Robin heard from Jaimie (Grammys Coordinator) that we should meet her at the theater for the "interview" around 7:30. We got there way early and waited on line with Danielle and Anne Marie. It was a pretty miserable wait with the wind howling. As it turned out, other media interviews were running late. Sometime after 8 PM, Robin and I were taken inside and put in line for the meet-n-greet. Jaimie gave us tickets for the show and then came back a few minutes later and swapped them out for "preferred seating" tickets and took us to the front of the MnG line. Eventually, they were ready and Jaimie started taking us into the MnG. As we were leaving, they were waiting for the Mastercard chairman to show up. Rick Newman was in the audience somewhere as well. We head to the theater and there were basically two kinds of seating. Down on the floor was the "preferred seating", which consisted of small tables for 4 or 5 with tablecloths and finger foods, with wait service bringing drinks which turned out to be free! Behind this and elevated was the "general" seating. The first section of this was filled, but the back was empty. Apparently, they limited the number for the event. Based on my unsuccessful phone experience requesting tickets, I'd bet they could have easily filled the remaining seats. If I had to guess, I'd say there were only about 500 people there and that might be generous. Robin and I were going to sit up with Danielle and Anne Marie even though we had the preferred tickets, but Danielle asked if I'd sit with her down there. I said I would and we found a table. A short while later, Jaimie comes down with Robin and Anne Marie and moves us up to a table in the first row. Robin can expand on this too. All in all it felt like a pretty intimate setting. They started the show with a video montage of mostly concert and video clips. There were a few photos, but I didn't see any of ours. Also, in the presentation, they said that the single disc Greatest Hits released a couple of years ago was certified platinum. I don't have enough superlatives for the show. The sound was immaculate, Pat's vocals were absolutely incredible. It was a revelation how great and powerful her voice is when she's not competing with the band. I didn't hear her miss a note all night, and she was blowing away people in the audience left and right. They used some loops for some of the songs - Love Is A Battlefield of course, and We Live For Love. It was surprising how well songs like You Better Run, Heartbreaker and True Love translated to acoustic without any additional loops. When it was all done, it'd been a great evening and felt like we'd just spent time visiting with old friends, it was that relaxed an interaction between Pat and Neil and the audience. Jaimie was super nice and very apologetic about the way things worked out, still, it was a unique event that I'm glad I was able to attend and wish you could have too.
That's the gist of my recollections at the moment. Your turn Robin, I think I'm going to take a nap!
Anne Marie and I had been working together trying to get tickets to Grammy Artists Revealed since the moment I heard the announcement on the radio. We got twitter accounts and were going back and forth trying to figure out how to DM and twitpic. We kept vigil on the Grammystwitter from day one! Danielle and I were working on it. Harold and I were emailing back and forth, sharing whatever info we could find.
Danielle, Anne Marie and I decided we'd spend the day in NYC whether we got tickets or not, hoping something would work out. Either way we knew we'd have a great time together. A fan club member informed Joe of an ad in the Village Voice with a limited number of tickets available to Mastercard holders. I don't know how many they allotted, but I was lucky enough to get ahold of 2 of those tickets. Now I just needed a third for myself, a fourth if Harold would be able to go.
That is when Joe stepped in and asked if I would like to interview Pat and NEIL!!! on behalf of the fanclub! The Grammy committee offered him 2 tickets. Joe wasn't able to go, so he offered them for me and Harold to attend. Couldn't have worked out better! The rundown is that we would have 5 minutes to do an interview after the sound check, which would tentatively be around 6:30 -- if we could make it there. I'm there, man! The transcript would be posted on the fanclub site. I could bring a recorder or camera, whatever I liked. Judy, Glo and I were emailing back and forth with some suggestions of questions. Since this was for the fanclub, it needed to be something that one of us couldn't answer. The Grammys would be asking questions for the general public.
Day of the show: Danielle and I arrived in Times Square around 2pm. We would be meeting up with Harold and Anne Marie, and spending time in the city before our 6:30 appointment at the Nokia Theater. As soon as we got there, Jaime (the Grammys coordinator) called to let me know that things were running later than expected and it would be closer to 7:30-8:00 before they would be ready for us. I told her time was no problem, we'd be there whenever she needed us.
The four of us got together at the Hard Rock right down the block. Walked around the city a bit, keeping an eye on
the general admission line! Down at the theater, the coordinators kept checking on us. Jaime was handling a media interview and got held up. (We learned that VH-1 was also there recording media spots for radio.) Then she called and said that they would not have time for us to do the interview, but she'd make sure we got in for the meet-n-greet. I told her that was fine and asked about the other people with us, but she said they couldn't handle any more people. It was just that hectic. She was very apologetic, but we were all just happy to be able to attend the PRIVATE show! We see Rick Newman and Lindsay Rush arrive.
One of the coordinators noticed we were still outside and brought us in out the wind. Jaime had her escort us to the meet-n-greet line. While waiting, the people handling the Mastercard VIPs were checking to see if someone was taking care of us, and we told them Jaime's taking great care of us. Each one of them say it's going to be a wonderful show. They heard the sound check and Pat's voice was amazing. Jaime brought us 2 general admission tickets, then came back and switched them with 2 preferred seating tickets. We could sit anywhere we want in the lounge area. Then she moved us to the front of the meet-n-greet line.
First Pat and NEIL!!! entered the room, and the photographer took a few photos of just the two of them. As we entered, their manager wanted the VIPs to run thru first. There were a lot of people to get thru, so they had to keep it moving. "hi," take a photo, go. I saw lots of smiling faces! Then it was Harold's and my turn. I managed to get the NEIL!!! hug and Pat hug too -- as did Harold. I said that Anne Marie and Danielle are here and say hi. NEIL!!! joked, "She's not crying, is she?" Not yet. (You all know the crying girl, right?) And we got the picture and had to move on. We thanked Jaime and went out.
We were led into the theater and saw tables in the floor area, which is usually standing, general admission.
Looking for Danielle and Anne Marie, we saw they had the front row of the next section. I asked one of the ushers if
they could join us. She said we could go down, but they could not. So we opted to have Danielle and Harold go to the "lounge" and Anne Marie and I stayed in general admission. As were were watching them eat free food, Jaime entered the room.
I went to thank her for everything. Knowing we had 2 extra people in our group, she escorted the 4 of us to a front row table on the NEIL!!! side! Go Jaime!
So here the 4 of us sat. Still shocked that we even got to go to the show. We were now eating free hors d'oeuvres, free drinks, front row NEIL!!!-- feeling very VIP and very lucky.
And then started a video montage of Pat and NEIL!!!'s career!
Both Anne Marie and Harold did great reviews of the show. I don't think I have much to add. The concert itself was just a unique experience. NEIL!!!'s pre-recorded percussions blended in the background. So mostly it was pure Pat's voice and SPYDER's acoustic guitar or piano. That voice was amazing. She really pushed it out there. We were right under a massive block of speakers and heard every sound-- it was pristine.
This was the first ever "GRAMMY ARTISTS REVEALED" so they didn't really have a format to follow. They were asked to talk a lot about each song. Pat said if we think they are talking too much just tell them to "shut the f... up."
(then apologized if there were any children -- it was an 18 and over show). They elaborated on some of the stories us diehards have heard. They really delved into the emotions they were feeling at the time. They talked a bit about 9/11/2001 and having had to play during that time. NEIL!!! made a side note about there being a list of 10 songs that were approved by radio, and 10 songs that were basically banned for airplay during that time. They had the most songs on each list. You couldn't play songs like All Fired up, Hit Me With Your Best Shot. But songs like We Belong and Invincible were sanctioned.
They did have a list of songs that they were choosing from for the show, but it was very loose. "You wanna do this one, how 'bout this one?" Pat asked what we would like to hear. At first people are yelling Heartbreaker, which NEIL!!! said will come later. I believe it was Anne Marie and a few others who yelled for "Wuthering Heights." Pat asked why we always want to hear that one. She said she listens to Kate Bush's version. Then sang a line, a capella. I yelled for True Love. At first, NEIL!!! thought they couldn't do it, he didn't have it on the laptop. Pat decided they would do without the percussions. They did an amazing impromptu version. It was great to have everyone else get to hear that blues voice, and that blues gui-tar!
During the show, NEIL!!! tossed some picks. One of those landed right in Anne Marie's arms. She was shocked but I
told her that he knows what he's doing-- it will come to you!
They were joking around a bit and Pat gave a shout out to Rick Newman saying something like, "See? I learned something hanging out at Catch!" (referring to the many comedians she hung out with at CATCH A RISING STAR.)
Everyone had a great time, dancing to Invincible, Hit Me with Your Best Shot, Love is a Battlefield, and the last song was Heartbreaker. You Better Run was just incredible done acoustically. Somebody's Baby, Promises, We Belong,... a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The people who put on the show had a really great time. They thought Pat's voice was better than ever. They all thanked us for coming out. Yes, they thanked us!
We did get a chance to talk to Lindsay Rush, who flew in from Minneapolis to be there. Lindsay is always very sweet. I was impressed with what she posted on her facebook page:
The night was over in a flash, it seemed. Upon leaving, we saw Jaime once again. She was with a group of co-workers/friends, so I just said goodnight and thanks while walking by. She called us back to thank us for coming and was happy we had a great time. And told us it was incredible how cute pat and NEIL!!! are together after all these years.
Here's my quick overview of the show. It was an acoustic "Storytellers"-style show, just Pat and Neil and a little assistance from Neil's laptop. The evening started with a brief video presentation that gave an overview of Pat's career, her Grammy nominations and wins. She won an unprecedented 4 years in a row Best Female Rock Vocalist. But, anyone reading this already knows that. Pat and Neil were introduced and they hit the stage. They opened with ALL FIRED UP, then went into SHADOWS OF THE NIGHT. Neil told a cool story (which I had never heard) about how he came up with the opening to SOTN. He was in the studio trying to figure out what to use as the introduction. He went down the hall to get a cup of tea and heard a mix of the layered vocals in the chorus and said, "That's it!" Just Pat's voice, no music. (Cool, right??!!)
They were very chatty and told us a little bit about each song. The highlight for me was an incredibly rocking YOU BETTER RUN, which sounds unbelievable acoustic!! The guitar just rocked, and Pat looked like she was having a blast. At one point they asked if we had any requests. Someone kept yelling out WUTHERING HEIGHTS. Pat said she doesn't understand why everyone always wants to hear that one. She said she is a fan of Kate Bush's original version and prefers to listen to that. Someone yelled, "YOURS IS BETTER!" and Neil agreed. ;-) She gave us a taste of the first line, but that's as far as it went. She sounded fabulous, of course.
The one request they did do, was Robin's! She yelled "TRUE LOVE"!!, and they did it! Neil didn't seem like he wanted to at first, but Pat was like, "Why not?" It totally rocked - Neil's geetar was the star of this one. That boy can play!
The set list (not all in order):
My only disappointment was that they didn't record the show. (At least not on video, maybe they did audio?) It was very special - intimate and loose, with great stories. I know how lucky I am to have been there!
